Jock
straps, Cotton, and Mens
The jock strap has been the focus of many gym room jokes and antics
since its invention in the 1860s. While it was first worn under swimwear
to make men more modest when bathing, the increase in sporting events
led to their widespread use and place in culture. Surely underwear has
been the subject of many jokes, funny or not, but jock straps have taken
over as the popular item of clothing to pun. They are used as giant
rubber bands and shot at unsuspecting teammates, and used in many fraternity
hazing procedures, often a heavily used and dirty one. Besides being
entertaining, they are actually functional and comfortable.
Men’s jock straps are made for support especially during sporting
events. They keep those important parts safe from too much movement
or shock, which can cause a number of ailments with colorful and entertaining
names. Cotton jock straps are comfortable and light, allowing sweat
to dissipate and air to flow freely. They are designed to be worn underneath
regular sporting clothes, and many men wear them all day long, working
out or merely working.
Sport jock straps often have a pouch in the front that allows for a
hard plastic cup to be inserted for impact protection from hard balls
such as baseballs. In baseball, cups are widely used for protection,
but they are also used in rugby, hockey and racquet ball.. Little League
baseball requires children to wear protective boy’s jock straps
when playing, although most major league players choose to leave theirs
in the locker for increased maneuverability, but they also have excellent
medical coverage in case the inevitable and quite entertaining happens,
a ball to the crotch. That is not something that most men would subject
themselves to, so despite the jokes, jock straps are still widely used.
Whether a brand is selected for style and comfort, such as Calvin Klein
jock straps, or for function and support as in most Bike jock straps,
the basic elements remain the same. They all have a pouch that is connected
to a waistband and a couple of elastic straps for security. Cheap jock
straps are often made of poor quality materials, or in poor conditions.
They are less comfortable and will not last as long as a high quality
cotton or synthetic jock strap. Finding jock straps online is easy,
but make sure to get the right size, often measured around the waist
sometimes with different sized cups.
The basic design of the jock strap has not changed for over a hundred
years, and is not poised to change anytime soon, they are entirely functional.
Underwear styles have changed and although a traditional jock strap
can still be easily found, many people prefer to wear something with
a little bit more coverage. Compression shorts are like briefs or boxer
briefs in fit, fully covering the male anatomy including the behind,
but they have a jock strap sewn into the inside of the underwear for
the support of the strap, but with a more acceptable style.
